Our Approach to Family Nutrition

Family units are incredibly complicated, and therefore, so is family nutrition. Family size, age differences, and individual needs are just a few elements influencing a family’s nutritional requirements. For example, child’s diet and nutritional needs will change at each life stage, and at each age. Alternatively, an adult’s needs will also vary depending on their medical conditions. Naturally, it can be challenging deciding what  your family should eat. Therefore, our approach to family nutrition is to address the needs of the entire family, while also addressing the needs of each family member. As family dietitians and lactation consultants, we’ll comb through each family members medical requirements, while also focusing on the family.

Some children are recommended to see a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) for weight management or other health issues. Because we’re trained in pediatric weight management, we can address most pediatric nutrition issues. Parents are often concerned with picky eating, food allergies, food aversions, and general eating habits. We’ll meet with you and your child to provide strategies to improve health and nutrition.

Lactation Consulting

The following is the most common problems mothers encounter while breastfeeding. You may require lactation counseling if you’re experiencing:

  • Difficult or painful latching.
  • Low milk supply or too much milk supply.
  • Infant weight loss (more than 10% loss from birth weight), or inadequate weight gain after two weeks post-birth.
  • Other less common problems could include food allergies and diet or nutrition concerns for the mother and/or baby.

A board-certified lactation consultant is an invaluable asset to breastfeeding families. We’ll assure you when breastfeeding and lactation are going well by providing information and support to help prevent and manage common concerns. Our certified lactation consultants help with:

  • Prenatal counseling addressing what may affect breastfeeding and lactation
  • Basic position and latch of the infant
  • Information about practices that promote successful breastfeeding and lactation
  • Preventing and managing common concerns such as: poor latch, inadequate milk transfer or supply, nipple or breast pain, and calming a fussy baby
  • Milk expression and storage for parents who must be separated from their babies
  • Strategies for breastfeeding and lactation after returning to work
  • Breastfeeding and lactation in challenging situations. For example, feeding twins or triplets, premature/sick infants, or infants in special medical situations
